Let's talk about "Warhammer Adventures". Short rant incoming!

Whooo boy, what a time to be alive, eh? GW is in full swing, releasing tons of new minis, tie-in games and... children books? Wait, what? I know what you're thinking right now, after reading these first, few lines of intro text. "I bet that you hate them children's books, ya cranky sod!" No, no I do not. I honestly think that the upcoming "Warhammer Adventures" series is one of the best things that Games Workshop ever made. No joke, no irony on my part, I'm 100% serious here. This is simply awesome and a clear sign that the Nottingham company thinks a couple steps forward. Simply put - they are making sure that today's children will, at the coming of age, jump from adorable kids stories to stuff like Gaunt's Ghosts or the Ciaphas Cain series. Sure, Warhammer as a whole is marketed towards children, but let's be honest - some of this stuff is not suitable for youngsters. Daemonculaba? Slaanesh? Hell, even the Imperium with its totalitar...

My musings on various stuff: Civilized Edition

There's a lot going on in the fandom right now. Awesome fan-made materials, official releases and news of upcoming projects - there's something for everyone, so let's go and take a look, shall we? 1. The Northmen Rules v2.0 by Jackdays from Kalevala Hammer Let the quality content flow! Always awesome Jackdays from the legendary Kalevala Hammer , returns once again with a content of topmost quality. His Northmen sourcebooks for WFRP are some of the best fan-made materials out there, and for a good reason. Being fascinating, extensive reads on the topic of the fearsome northern tribes of the Warhammer Fantasy world, they're a true boon to Gamemasters and players alike. A few weeks ago Jack has released a new version of this great add-on for WFRP 1, 2 and 3, and I can't stress enough how good they are. You can check them out yourselves, by visiting his website and downloading them from his rich repository of goodies. They're worth your time, trust me on...

Role-playing Rants: Was Warhammer Fantasy "too dark" for its own good?

Image
Most of the old and middlehammerers know the evolution of Warhammer Fantasy. From the grim and down-to-earth, but also absurd fantasy game, it evolved into... Yeah, into what exactly? I won't pretend to be one of the "old guard". Sure, in my youth I used to play WFRP 1st edition from time tom time. It was an extremly popular game in Poland, still is really. However these first forays into the Old World are shrouded in the mist of childhood and obscurity. I don't remember too much about these games, except for the fact that I've once played a Zoat. Good times. Anyway, I had a chance to re-read the 1st edition rulebook, some time ago. Aside from a nostalgia trip, I've noticed how different the arts were, from the latter incarnations of this game system. Skulls were few and in between. People were actually smiling, while those in the 2nd edition books look, like they have a constant constipation. The atmosphere was just... fantastic. In that it resembled a...

Role-playing Rants: Why I can't wait to read the Age of Sigmar RPG

Image
I'm still in the camp for AoS haters. I think that the Age of Sigmar is boring, uninspiring and generally a crappy legacy for the venerable Warhammer Fantasy. That's why I can't wait to read the upcoming role-playing game, set in this universe. I know that Age of Sigmar has come a long way, since its premiere in 2015. New models, new rules and new books from the Black Library are definetly helping in the developement of this setting. For me however, AoS still lacks that one thing, which could it actually make it interesting and worth checking out – the everyday factor. What I mean by that, is that I don't want to constantly read about Stormcast Eternals battling generic Khornate dudes in crimson armour, or Aelfs (sigh) duking it out with servants of Nurgle. I want to know how everyday life looks in this universe. I want to know how people live their lives in every one of the kingdoms that comprise the world of this game. I want to know what they're eating, what a...

A WFRP 30th anniversary special: an interview with Graeme Davis

Image
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, so I wanted to commemorate it in some appropriate manner. Fortunately, thanks to a gaming buddy (thanks Andy!), I've managed to land an interview with one of the original game's creators, Graeme Davis himself. It's really short, but for a WFRP geek like myself, who grew up with the game and had so much experience with it, both good and bad, this is a huge thing and a huge honor. Happy birthday WFRP! Without further ado, here's the whole thing. Enjoy. Xathrodox86: Which edition of Warhammer Fantasy did you enjoyed working on the most? Graeme Davis: First edition, definitely. For the others I was a freelancer working at home on material that others had created, but for first edition I was deep in the creative craziness that was the GW Design Studio in the 80s. It was a unique time and place and a unique team, and a fantastic experience for me. Xathrodox86: How big was your input in the...

Role-playing Rants: Coming to terms with stuff, or why I don't like Warhammer Fantasy anymore

Image
It's true that most people grow more wise, as the time goes on. It's also true that many of us begin to realise things, which we took for granted for many years, or considered to be set in stone. I've realised one such thing yesterday and it was a rather big revelation for me. I've stopped liking Warhammer Fantasy. Like, at all. I've spent yesterday's evening finishing my copy of Warhammer Quest for Steam. Some time ago I did a positive review of this game on my blog and yes, I still stand by my verdict... mostly. Aside from the realisation that the game is far, damn too long and that the computer can be a cheating bastard at times, I still reccomend it to any fans of Warhammer Fantasy. Fans, to whom I do not longer belong. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish You see, as I was finishing this game yesterday, I've begun to think on Warhammer in general. How did it came to be? What did it brought to the world of wargaming and RPG's? Why is it b...

Age of Sigmar is the 9th Edition!

Image
Tommorow, on the 4th of July, the Age of Sigmar will be available for pre-order. The rules have been leaked already, alongside tons of pics of minis and a couple shots of new terrain pieces. In my last post I've said everything there needed to be said about AoS and nothing changed in that matter. More so, now that I've read the rules my ire is even greater. Combine that with the (almost certain) rumour that there will be no 9th Edition, and you can probably guess how much this whole thing pisses me off. A lot actually Bear in mind that this article was written, based on the info from various online sources, including Bell of Lost Souls and Guerilla Miniature Games, as well as the newest White Dwarf. GW's new game is supposed to be fun and easy to learn, with rules printed on a total of 4 pages (seriously, this should give you all the clue of how much this game will suck) and being a "living document", available from their website for free and worked ...

My problems with the Age of Sigmar and Games Workshop in general. Rant warning!

Image
With the Age of Sigmar pics and rules details doing the rounds, I've finally realized just how much interest I've lost in this hobby. Call me a pessimist, a killjoy, an unreformable fossil from a previous era. I don't care. To me the Age of Sigmar is simply a betrayal of highest magnitude. It's horrible. It's atrocious. From the cesspool that was the "End Times" came Age of Sigmar, a game that has almost nothing to do with Warhammer Fantasy, at all. Look at the models. Look at the (supposed) fluff. We have some shiny new world with not-Dwarves and not-Elves (copyright is fun!) with hundreds of generic fantasy nations all around. Into this world the SIGMARINES come on their wings of fury and boy, do they look retarded. Words cannot express my rage Sanguinary Guard resemblance aside, they look nothing, nothing like anything from Warhammer Fantasy. There are no vibes, no references (hammers don't count), literally nothing WFB about those guys....
