Xathrodox86 reviews: "Warhammer Quest 2: The End Times" for Steam

Image
Yeah, I know that I was supposed to review "Ironclad", but stuff happened and y'all get something else. Almost five years ago I've managed to finish the first "Warhammer Quest" on the PC, and now I'll tell you all that you need to know about its sequel! Let's not beat around the bush here - this title takes place during the End Times, the final death troes of the venerable Warhammer Fantasy. Now, as most people I consider the finale of WFB to be some of the worst written fiction of all time. Fun fact, I haven't read a single positive comment about it! Really, not even one. There were a few people who liked the army lists they've prepared in the ET books, but I haven't met a single person who said: "Yes, the End Times were fantastically written. Can I have some more, please?" That said there were a few good things about them, mainly the "Vermintide" games. "Vermintide" 1 & 2 are seriously some of the coole...

Role-playing Rants: My favorite player character: Part Four

Image
Those of you with eyes of a hawk no doubt noticed that I used the singular term "character", in the title of this post. That's because it's going to be about a single hero - one that I've RP'ed almost 12 years ago. If you're reading my blog for some time now, you know that I'm not particulary fond of participating in roleplaying games as a player. I'm the forever GM-kind of guy. I like the creative control, the world building possibilites and, of course, the power of life and death over my players... Errrr... I mean, the chance to see them evolve and become the heroes that they were always destined to be! What I want to say is that I'm not too fond of playing RPGs. The last time that I was a regular player, was in 2017, back when I've participated in a Vampire: The Masquerade game as a Brujah DJ with a thing for baseball bats. Since then it was only a couple of one-shots, but nothing too serious. That said, back in 2008 when I've...

Role-playing Rants: My honest thoughts on the 4th edition of WFRP

Image
A few weeks ago Cubicle 7 have released the covers for the 4th edition of WFRP, along with some news, regarding the first campaign, that they'll be releasing. Let's take a closer look at what we've been told. Right at the start I want to make one thing abundantly clear - I'm very happy for the release of next edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I think that the 3rd one was a mediocre effort and a new edition will have a chance to wash that stain away. If it will be done right, of course. So first of all we have the covers. One for the starter set, one for the rulebook itself. They compliment each other nicely and I definitely like the shout-out to the first edition of the game. From the covers alone a lot can be told and I think that Cubicle 7 gives us subtle hints about the tone of the game. On one hand we have a bunch of classic Warhammer heroes, doing ordinary Warhammer stuff, which is always nice and gives this setting a feel of normality, of everyday soci...

Role-playing Rants: Why I can't wait to read the Age of Sigmar RPG

Image
I'm still in the camp for AoS haters. I think that the Age of Sigmar is boring, uninspiring and generally a crappy legacy for the venerable Warhammer Fantasy. That's why I can't wait to read the upcoming role-playing game, set in this universe. I know that Age of Sigmar has come a long way, since its premiere in 2015. New models, new rules and new books from the Black Library are definetly helping in the developement of this setting. For me however, AoS still lacks that one thing, which could it actually make it interesting and worth checking out – the everyday factor. What I mean by that, is that I don't want to constantly read about Stormcast Eternals battling generic Khornate dudes in crimson armour, or Aelfs (sigh) duking it out with servants of Nurgle. I want to know how everyday life looks in this universe. I want to know how people live their lives in every one of the kingdoms that comprise the world of this game. I want to know what they're eating, what a...

Xathrodox86 reviews: "Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide Drachenfels"

Image
Holiday time is almost upon us, so why not give someone you like a cool present? "Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide" is currently on a discount on Steam, along with all of its DLC's. But are they really worth the price? I must admit - I love "Vermintide" to death. This is THE Warhammer game, that I've been waiting for ages to get my hands on. The atmosphere is perfect, the gameplay rocks and I love the characters. Oh and the music - it's simply great. Sure there are a couple of things that can irk your average player (I'm looking at you, loot drop system), but in the end they aren't that significant, when it comes to the overall quality of this title. In my opinion "Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide" is the only, good thing that came out of all that End Times nonsense. Given the overall quality of the send-off that Warhammer Fantasy did recieved, that's really saying something. However there's the question of "Vermninti...

Reblogged: Kalevala Hammer: 30th anniversary of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay...

Image
Oh yeah, it's my first reblog, but don't worry! It's done for a just cause. I'm not the one for long speeches (yeah, yeah I know - "Chaos in the Old World" review) when it comes to important things, that happen in my life, be them family matters, personal successes or hobby related. So I'll let Jack Days from Kalevala Hammer grab this one. His post about WFRP's 30th anniversary is much better, than anything that I'd ever write here. Visit his website and read his post , it'll be worth it, I guarantee it. While you're at it, go and check out his fantastic fan-made material, like the WHFRP Norsca supplement. Great stuff. " Kalevala Hammer: 30th anniversary of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay... : This is the year, when Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay becomes 30 years old! And it might be one of these autumn days (October), when that happ... " Altough I will add a few things from myself, why the hell not? A few posts ago I've wr...

Xathrodox86 reviews: Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide

Image
I used to be a huge online games player. The act of pitting one's skill against a living opponent is always fun, but there is one thing in online gaming that I absolutely adore - cooperation. "Left 4 Dead", "Sniper Elite", "Far Cry 3" - these are only some of the games that I've played with friends in a cooperative mode. We had a blast during those sessions, helping each other, yelling through microphones late in the night, and generally just having a grand time. Now, after a two year brake, I've returned to the wonderful world of coop a few weeks ago, after finally purchasing " Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide". All I have to say are three words: money well spent. Damn straight! "Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide" is a first person coop game, made by Fatshark, a company previously known for such titles as "War of the Roses" and "Hamilton's Great Adventure". Certainly they can't be con...

Xathrodox86 reviews: "Warhammer: Mark of Chaos"

Image
It turned out that "Total War: Warhammer" became a huge success, recieving generally positive reviews worldwide and becoming one of the best WFB games ever made. It was always funny to me, that a very popular tabletop franchise like Warhammer Fantasy, never got enough good video games, and so few of them in fact. There was of course "Shadow of the Horned Rat", a retro, ultra hard title, that was very good for its time, but also punishingly hard and definetly not for everyone. Then there was the sequel to that game, called "Dark Omen", which many people consider to be the best Warhammer Fantasy game ever made. While it was also incredibly hard and brutal, at least its mechanics were much better made, then those of its predecessor. After its premiere in 1998, fans of Old World had to wait nearly 8 years for the next game, set in the universe of WFB. In 2006 "Warhammer: Mark of Chaos" made its debut. Was it worth the wait? This cover looks pr...

Role-playing Rants: Coming to terms with stuff, or why I don't like Warhammer Fantasy anymore

Image
It's true that most people grow more wise, as the time goes on. It's also true that many of us begin to realise things, which we took for granted for many years, or considered to be set in stone. I've realised one such thing yesterday and it was a rather big revelation for me. I've stopped liking Warhammer Fantasy. Like, at all. I've spent yesterday's evening finishing my copy of Warhammer Quest for Steam. Some time ago I did a positive review of this game on my blog and yes, I still stand by my verdict... mostly. Aside from the realisation that the game is far, damn too long and that the computer can be a cheating bastard at times, I still reccomend it to any fans of Warhammer Fantasy. Fans, to whom I do not longer belong. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish You see, as I was finishing this game yesterday, I've begun to think on Warhammer in general. How did it came to be? What did it brought to the world of wargaming and RPG's? Why is it b...
