Role-playing Rants: Why I dislike the "sandbox approach"

Image
A few days ago I've posted a rather controversial tweet about sandbox games, and why I think they're infinitely less appealing than those "on the rails". I also made a terrible mistake of forgetting about how much people get offended these days. My meme-based tweet twisted a lot of panties, fortunately most of the people interacting with it were reasonable and understood its tongue-in-cheek nature. To those people I say: thank you. Now back to topic. I dislike sandbox games a lot. They're boring, sluggish and only offer the guise of freedom. Shit, I almost forgot - this is of course only mine opinion, even if I present it as a revealed truth. Introducing the meme that started it all! Anyway, sandbox games - they're boring. Every single sandbox that I was playing or running was suffering from that problem. Even the ones that I watched on YouTube were horribly boring. The main problem here is that sandbox only works if the players have a clear goal for both thei...

"Beat the boredom!" Episode 3: "Pretty Things" by Alfred Nuñez Jr.

Image
For this week's "Beat the boredom!" episode I'll be writing about a favorite classic of mine - the WFRP 2nd edition starter adventure, called "Pretty Things"! It was included in the GM's Pack, which was sold with the GM's screen. I still have both of these products, even though they're quite battered. After all, I've been using them for almost 12 years now. Anyway, this scenario was written by Alfred Nuñez Jr., who's one of the WFRP veterans and is still active in the fandom. You can find his website here , and it is definitely worth checking out! As for the adventure itself - it's a perfect introduction to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, as it details the PCs quest to reunite a small, frightened girl with her father. On a lonely, Talabecland road, our heroes encounter a scene of utter carnage and promise a dying woman to rescue Bianka von Radische, a little girl kidnapped by vile bandits. Little do they know, that these hoodlums will ...

Role-playing Rants: My favorite player characters: Part Two

Image
My trip down the memory lane continues with even more, memorable WFRP characters! Let's take a look at a few of them, and enjoy the tales of their deeds. This time we're covering the heroes of my first playthroughs of "Terror in Talabheim" and "The Thousand Thrones", as well as the Polish-written campaign - "Lord of Winter". There are quite a lot of them, so I will describe the most interesting ones, the ones that I still think about to this very day. Let's take a trip down the memory lane, shall we? 1. Lukyan Aleksandrovitch Yakov, Kislevite spy master (played by Martin) To this day one of my favorite PC's of all time. A ruthless Kislevite Checkist (posing as a Imperial merchant) with low moral compass, and a low tolerance for fools, Lukyan survived 6 chapters of "The Thousand Thrones", one of the hardest WFRP campaign ever written. His task was to find the miraculous child and asses the threat that it posed to Kislev ...

My hobby summary of 2019. 2020 can't arrive soon enough!

Image
2019 came and went, but it was one of the most intense, hobby-filled years of my life. First of all - I got married! It was, to this very day, the happiest moment of my life. What can I say? Being married rocks! Here;s to my wife, Lia - I love you baby, more than anything else on this world. Hobby-wise, 2019 was intense as hell. I've continued to explore Delta Green, the modern, para-military system, centred around the dreaded Lovecraftian Mythos. I can safely say that this is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and that in 2020 I intend to play it a lot. A few months back I've started to regularly (once a month, usually) enjoy it via Roll20, with a couple of very nice people from Sweden. Johanna, Jim and Martin - here's to you. Fhtagn! Just keep those SAN points high! When it comes to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, it definitely regained a place in my heart, as my all-time favorite roleplaying game of all time. A few years back I couldn't look at the ruleb...

My hobby summary of 2018. What lies ahead?

Image
Another year, another mark. 2018 was very a hobby-heavy period for me, but I'm not complaining. In fact I can't wait for the 2019, as it promises a lot more action for me! First of all - I'm getting married next year. That fact alone is making me smile like a madman and I can't stress enough how happy I am about that fact. My fiancee is a wonderful human being and I'm extremely lucky to have a second half like her. This will be a completely new chapter in my life, one that I'm very keen to explore. As for the 2018 and my hobby related stuff... it was a blast. I've finished GM'ing "The Thousand Thrones" in one group (the first of my IRL groups) and "Terror in Talabheim" in the other (Roll20), together with a bunch of one-shot scenarios. Both campaigns are for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd edition, and both of them are long-time favorites of mine. I've also ran a demi-campaign set in Khuresh, in the far east of the Warhammer...

It's the end of the year! Let's sum up the 2017. What lies ahead?

Image
Right before the end of December, I look back on the whole year and sum up my entire hobby endeavors. It was a crazy year. Some personal stuff aside, I can easily call it a success, when it comes to hobby related stuff. Let's take a closer look on some of the more important points of 2017. 1. Starting a new RPG group. Time to step back into that familiar tavern... One year ago I've returned to running WFRP live. Until then, for a year I only GM'ed it on Roll20 (and I still do!), but I wanted to return to "real life" experience. Needless to say, it went well. I've gathered a fantastic group of fellow hobby enthusiasts and we're playing once a week for a year now. There were a few changes in the group's composition at the very beginning, but right now it's all stable. During that single year we've managed to complete two classic 1st edition campaigns - "Lichemaster" and the entire "The Enemy Within"! Not only th...

Grimvember 2017 is here! "A Secret Inheritance" is a must-play!

Image
We return to our regularly scheduled reviewing, this time with "A Secret Inheritance" by Steve Cumiskey. This one's a real treat and no mistake. I've GM'ed this adventure last year for my Roll20 group. The boys were on a trip from Talabecland to Nuln and, along the way, I wanted to spice things up a bit for their little gang. "A Secret Inheritance" turned out to be exactly what I needed! Plus it's full of Merchants! Who dosen't like economy themes in his adventures? The premise is pretty simple. The adventurers need to find a shelter from a storm, in a small town of Eisental and become embroiled in a local guild affair. The town itself, originally located in Ostermark (altough you could place it anywhere. In my case it was in Talabecland) is a quiet community, which recently lost its two priests. Not only that but the merchant guild's building got burned to the ground as well, two weeks before the PC's arrival. Our heroes are h...

Grimvember 2017 is here! It's hard to live in "A Dog Eat Dog World"

Image
Grimvember is in full swing, as I review yet another, fantastic scenario - "A Dog Eat Dog World" by the talented Samuel Kisko. I've originally ran this piece between the latter chapters of "The Thousand Thrones" campaign. My players were already pretty buffed up and so I thought that this scenario should not present too much of a problem for them. Oh how wrong I was... That front cover kicks all sorts of ass! This adventure, set just after the Storm of Chaos, starts somewhere on the road in Middenland, but in reality can be set anywhere within the Empire. The PC's encounter a jolly Halfling by the name of Don Don. He's having trouble with pulling his food cart and, of course, asks our heroes for help, offering them free meals in return. Soon the poor shorty gets kidnapped by a huge dog and nearly killed by it. The adventurers (hopefully) save him just in time and notice that the felled beast is in fact a Middenland Wolfhound, a famous breed of...

Grimvember 2017 is here! Xathrodox86 reviews "The Thousand Thrones"!

Every gamemaster has a personal favorite when it comes to pre-made campaigns and scenarios. Here's mine - the best WFRP campaign ever written. "The Thousand Thrones". I've just finished "The Enemy Within" with my group. It is, without a doubt, one of the best campaigns out there, a true masterpiece of intrigue, action and drama. It pales, however, to the awesomeness that is "The Thousand Thrones". What can I say about it, other than that it is the best campaign that was ever written for the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. In my humble opinion, of course Since the Grimvember has just begun, I thought: "why not start this event with a bang". And so I've decided to make a huge review of this, my favorite of all the pre-made campaigns for WFRP. After all, Grimvember is only once a year, so it should be done in a right manner, am I right? Be advised: this review will contain spoilers. This article is directed mainly to gamemasters...
