Xathrodox86 reviews: "Shadow of Ullanor" by Rob Sanders

Image
The Imperium recieved a major beating in the "Last Son of Dorn", but it's not out of the game yet. The Imperial Fists have been reformed, and mankind travels to Ullanor for one, final battle with the Orks. Rob Sanders penned the 11th title in "The Beast Arises" series - "Shadow of Ullanor". Looks like this poor planet just can't take a break! There's a lot going on in this book, and it was sometimes hard for me to keep track of all the action. Sanders makes a solid job of tying all the loose plots together, however there is one problem - we've seen this all before. Is it still worth a read, though? Humanity once again reaches Ullanor, the Deathwatch capture more Ork psykers (off-screen, I might add), Thane shows the High Lords their place, as Koorland did before him. Even the final engagement with the Beast(s) is very similar to the previous one. We've all seen this before, and that's why this book doesn't really offe...

Xathrodox86 reviews: "The Last Son of Dorn" by David Guymer

Grimvember 2019 came to an end, and I need a small break from the Warhammer Fantasy... at least for a while. Since I'm in a huge Warhammer 40,000 drive lately, I've decided to return to "The Beast Arises" series, and review another one of its many tomes - "The Last Son of Dorn". David Guymer returns to the series, and tells the story of a final (hopefully), desperate attempt by the Imperium to defeat the titular Beast and free the galaxy from its menace. There's a lot, and I do mean A LOT, going on in this book. We have the newly-formed Deathwatch, finally being shown to include members from the latter foundings, taking the fight to the orks. We have Valhallans, one of my favorite Imperial Guard regiments, selling their lives dearly against their arch-foes. The newly returned Sisters of Silence are also active during the war, and there's a palpable sense of tension and desperation, right from the very first page of "The Last Son of Dorn"...

Xathrodox86 reviews: "Watchers in Death" by David Annandale

Do you want Deathwatch? Cause that's how we got Deathwatch! In the 9th entry in "The Beast Arises" series, David Annandale explains how the iconic, elite, xeno-fighting force was originally established. At the end of the previous book, "The Beast Must Die", the forces of the Imperium have been devastated. The Orks turned out to be a much bigger threat than originally anticipated, and so Lord Commander Koorland decided to level the odds a bit. He knows that to fight the greenskin menace head on is basically a suicide, so he orders the formation of elite kill-teams. Clad in the black of mourning, these strike squads prove to be very effective against the Orks, but will their expertise be sufficent enough in defeating the xenos once and for all? Slaying xenos never looked this good! That said these iconic shoulderpads are not yet in service, as of this books' timeline. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, "Watchers in Death" finally gives us the orig...

Took me some time. As always. Anyway here's the continuation of the Ebenhard VII campaign. The bugs are still in the game, but both the Space Marines and the Inquisition have a few aces in their sleeves. This KT game was played between 3 players. Steeming the tide: Astra Militarum and Adeptus Astartes take on the might of the Great Devourer!

Last weekend I've played my biggest game of WH40K yet, in which two imperial armies clashed against some Nids in a Last Stand scenario. The game took almost 9 hours from start to finish and was packed with pure awesomesauce. We've arranged a Last Stand mission from the "Stronghold Assault" supllement. Blood Ravens and Imperial Guard, each at 1500 pts., fought against the Tyranid Swarm, which was 3000 points strong. The game ended after 5 turns with the Imperials amassing 18-19 points, while the Bugs gathered a total of 11. Anyway: here's the full report with some nice pictures. Also it will be the first of a few linked bat reps, that will compose a narrative campaign of sorts, so stay tuned for more. As an added bonus, the report will be dramatized... a bit. The Great Devourer hungers! 1. Our armies A. Imperial Guard (1500 pts.) HQ: CCS with Mortar, 2 x Sniper Rifles and an Officer of the Fleet. Warlord Trait: Old Grudges (which I...

It's Kill Team time! Tyranids vs Imperial Guard, 250 points

Image
Before we dive into some ratty goodness of "End Times: Thanquol", let's take a small brake and explore the wonderful world of Kill Team, courtesy of always excellent Heralds of Ruin. This is my third Kill Team game and the second one that I was playing against Tyranids. My friend Chris, who got his baptism by fire while fighting against Orks, was up for the challenge and so we prepared our lists and got to work. The game was played at 250 points, standard for Kill Team. We've rolled for the sabotage scenarion, and Chris decided to attack my well entrenched Guardsemn, who were defending a couple of field-stricken Chimeras. Obviously Chris is new to this game, as not only he was attacking me, but also provided my forces with some homemeade (and totaly awesome!) Aegis Defence Line fortifications, which he made himself! How cool is that? Bitchin! I really need to finally paint it tough... As for our lists there were some changes from the last game. Last ...

Baby's first Kill Team, or why it pays not to be assaulted

Image
Yesterday I had a killer game of Kill Team with two of my friends, and let me tell you: it was awesome! For those of you who don't know, Kill Team is a small skirmish game, based on the rules of Warhammer 40K, but with a couple of twists, First of all most units are treated individually, even those who are in squads. This means that finally we have a game, where it is possible to target different opponents with different guys. The games are obviously rather smallish. Usually the army will be worth 250 points and consist of no more than 20 models. There are almost no vehicles and the whole thing is like a 40K version of Mordheim which is really cool. Oh and just FYI I am talking about the Heralds of Ruin version of Kill Team, not the GW one, which I find to be rather inbalanced. I'll post the adress to the HoR website at the end of this article. Be sure to visit and check out their stuff. It's really great and shows how much worth is a true dedication to one's hob...
