"Beat the boredom!" Episode 7: "Blood Is Thicker" by Sean Korzeniewski and Russell Thurman

Image
The "Beat the boredom!" series is slowly coming to an end. I've enjoyed it immensely, but it's time to return to my usual writing schedule. Plus I want to write about other things than scenarios! That said, today I will review another WFRP adventure - "Blood Is Thicker"! Written by two authors, it takes place in a small village of Neubühl, which normally isn't even present on any map. Yup, it's that small. Just a tiny hamlet, somewhere in one of the deep forests of the Empire. Lately there's been something going on with the villagers living within its premises. They've begun to act strangely and hostile. Once Neubühl was a welcoming site to any traveler, but now it's full of unpleasant people who don't like strangers and are generally unwelcome to almost everyone. That's not all, however, as more and more citizens of this village go missing, and there is talk of rampant mutations amongst the populace of the town... The PCs find a ...

Role-playing Rants: My favorite player characters: Part Five

Image
Allow me to take you on a journey into the grim and dark future of endless war, blind zealotry and cynicism - the dystopian world of Warhammer 40,000 awaits. Even though WFRP is my default go-to game, I do play other titles as well... occasionally. One of them, and one that I enjoy a lot, is the Fantasy Flight Games' 1st edition of Dark Heresy. Now it wasn't always that way, as those who read my blog for some time, know already. I used to dislike DH a lot, but that was a long, long time ago. Currently I only have fond memories of this game, and would very much like to run it in the near future. Anyway, my players created quite a few and interesting characters during our times together, when we were discovering the many and varied dangers of the 41st Millenium. I want to tell you about a few of them. 1. Solomon Victus, a ruthless and ambitious arbitrator (played by Martin) Sometimes you just find the perfect artwork for a character. This picture just screams ...

Role-playing Rants: My favorite player characters: Part One

Enough with the reviews, enough with the fillers. Let's talk buisness - Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay buisness! The analitics don't lie. Aside from various Asian porn sites which seem to really like my blog, and re-visit it all the time, the biggest ammount of hits that I generate, come from people who are all about WFRP. This little slice of internet was initially created as a way for me to rekindle my love for this system (which it managed to do), but over the years I also wanted to write about other stuff. World of Darkness, Warhammer 40,000, Delta Green and many other topics have been tackled by me with mixed results, but they never gained the ammount of enthusiasm and popularity, that my WFRP posts managed to achieve. I'm cool with that, to be honest. There was a time when I was quietly wishing for a more diverse group of followers, but that's in the past now. I am grateful for what I have, for what I was able to build over the years, and I wouldn't change ...

Role-playing Rants: Bring out your inner beast!

Image
Those pesky Beastmen, they're so adorable, aren't they? Funny goat-men who sometimes try to ruin the adventurer's day by jumping out of the forest, screaming "oogah boogah boogah!" At least that is how they're usually portrayed: as a bunch of inbred dumbasses, who are only threatening to level 1 characters, and only on a very bad day. It doesn't matter if we are talking about official or fan-made publications - the Beastmen always get the shaft. What if I'd told you that it is possible to make them a formidable, scary and unique threat to your players? Is it even possible? Yes, yes it is. For that we'll have to reach out to our boy, H.P. Lovecraft himself and steal a bit of his ideas and, more importantly, the atmosphere of primeval horror, which he was able to include in his works with unparalleled skill. You see, the Beastmen are not men with hooves. They're not men with animal heads, wearing shit-stained loincloths and brandis...

Role-playing Rants: Why I can't wait to read the Age of Sigmar RPG

Image
I'm still in the camp for AoS haters. I think that the Age of Sigmar is boring, uninspiring and generally a crappy legacy for the venerable Warhammer Fantasy. That's why I can't wait to read the upcoming role-playing game, set in this universe. I know that Age of Sigmar has come a long way, since its premiere in 2015. New models, new rules and new books from the Black Library are definetly helping in the developement of this setting. For me however, AoS still lacks that one thing, which could it actually make it interesting and worth checking out – the everyday factor. What I mean by that, is that I don't want to constantly read about Stormcast Eternals battling generic Khornate dudes in crimson armour, or Aelfs (sigh) duking it out with servants of Nurgle. I want to know how everyday life looks in this universe. I want to know how people live their lives in every one of the kingdoms that comprise the world of this game. I want to know what they're eating, what a...

Reblogged: Kalevala Hammer: 30th anniversary of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay...

Image
Oh yeah, it's my first reblog, but don't worry! It's done for a just cause. I'm not the one for long speeches (yeah, yeah I know - "Chaos in the Old World" review) when it comes to important things, that happen in my life, be them family matters, personal successes or hobby related. So I'll let Jack Days from Kalevala Hammer grab this one. His post about WFRP's 30th anniversary is much better, than anything that I'd ever write here. Visit his website and read his post , it'll be worth it, I guarantee it. While you're at it, go and check out his fantastic fan-made material, like the WHFRP Norsca supplement. Great stuff. " Kalevala Hammer: 30th anniversary of the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay... : This is the year, when Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay becomes 30 years old! And it might be one of these autumn days (October), when that happ... " Altough I will add a few things from myself, why the hell not? A few posts ago I've wr...

Role-playing Rants: Coming to terms with stuff, or why I don't like Warhammer Fantasy anymore

Image
It's true that most people grow more wise, as the time goes on. It's also true that many of us begin to realise things, which we took for granted for many years, or considered to be set in stone. I've realised one such thing yesterday and it was a rather big revelation for me. I've stopped liking Warhammer Fantasy. Like, at all. I've spent yesterday's evening finishing my copy of Warhammer Quest for Steam. Some time ago I did a positive review of this game on my blog and yes, I still stand by my verdict... mostly. Aside from the realisation that the game is far, damn too long and that the computer can be a cheating bastard at times, I still reccomend it to any fans of Warhammer Fantasy. Fans, to whom I do not longer belong. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish You see, as I was finishing this game yesterday, I've begun to think on Warhammer in general. How did it came to be? What did it brought to the world of wargaming and RPG's? Why is it b...

Third time's the charm. "End Times: Archaon" has been concluded!

Image
The last three heroes of the final "End Times" book have arrived and are ready for a proper and stern review. Yeah... it's time to finally end this. This ET review took me more time than the actual event and that's really embarassing... kinda. Anyway here it is. The end of the "End Times: Archaon". 1. Grimgor, Incarnate of Beasts Lean, mean and green killing machine! He's big, he's bad and he's back! Everyone's favorite not-Ghazghkull plays a major role in the "End Times" and his stats and abilities reflect that nicely. Unsurprisingly Grimgor is a CQC monster with a whooping 6 Attacks, WS of 8 and Strength 6 he's a force to be reckoned with. Combine that with his special rules, like the "Best of da best" which lets him re-roll failed To Hit and To Wound hits in a challenge and you have one nasty customer. Aside from his obvious role as an ass-kicking machine, he's also a decent army buffer. "Da...

This Is the End. Here is the first part of the "End Times: Archaon" review

Image
All good things must eventually come to pass. The same goes for medicore and bad things, so this is the final entry in my "End Times: Archaon" review. Ok, actually that was a lie. Because of IRL reasons I'll need to split this one into two parts. Also sorry for the delay peeps. Just got some stuff to sort out right now. Anyway, like I've said already, this isn't the last "End Times" post. There will be a summary of all new, special units available in ET and a long-ass rant about the overall quality of this thing, coupled with some thoughts on the Age of Sigmar. But first things first. Let's take a look on new special characters that "Archaon" provides us with. 1. Skarr Bloodwrath, Daemonic Lord of Khorne  He really got beefed up on red meat!  They don't even pretend anymore. Skarr Bloodwrath likes blood... like a lot. Seriously, just look at him. He carries Bloodstorm Blades and has the "Bloodborn" special rule...

It's The Beginning Of The End! Here's part 1 of the "End Times: Archaon" review

Image
It's time to finish this. Altough "End Times" are no more, and AoS is the new black apparently, I still have "Archaon" to go through. So let's get started, shall we? "Archaon" is probably the biggest and most complex books of all. It's simply huge and has a ton of new stuff, which can be used both in ET and normal WFB games. Of course there's still the question of whether they're good or not. Well, let's see it for ourselves. For this article I'll focus on new game rules. Next I'll review the new formations, and finally the new special characters. Fun times ahead! The End Is Nigh! 1. Lords of Battle Campaign: Halting the Apocalypse "Archaon" introduces another epic campagin, focused on stopping the end of the world. By now you probably know that fluff wise it failed and the Old World is no more, so this scenario should end with Chaos side winning the game, but I guess it can be played for shits and gi...
