Grimvember 2019 is here! "Eureka!" is a classic tale, worth checking out!

Grimvember is in full swing, and I've decided to revisit an old favorite of mine - a classic adventure by Paul Hargreaves, called "Eureka!".

Gotta love this old school font...
Taking place in Nuln, the best city in the entire Old World (no, I'm not biased), this scenario finds the PC's employed by an eccentric inventor, Wolfgang Kugelschreiber (yes, really). He needs their help with dealing against a bunch of thugs, who want to extort money from him. Kugelschreiber is slightly manic, but a genius none the less, and he promises the party a large sum of money, if they'll help him with his "problem", while he continues working on one of his many, fantastic inventions. Unfortunately for the heroes, it soon turns out that the extorsionists are not whom they seemed at first. What's more, is that the goverment of Nuln has also taken interest in the engineer's work...

"Eureka!" is a very short, but also extremely entertaining scenario, which lets the GM completely unleash his mind and create just about any, fantastic invention, he ever wanted to introduce in his games. The author already gives a few examples, including the "Kugelmatic Turkey Plucker" and "Kugelmatic Fast Draw Scabbard", among many others. They can be of an immense help to the PC's... or to actually make their life much harder! I doubt that the "Kugelmatic Fire Extinguisher" will in fact be able to stop an angry Bright Wizard! That said, "Eureka!" is a great way for the gamemaster to introduce some of his own, wacky inventions, and to give his players a time of their lives, field-testing them.

Yes, Kugelschreiber has also been working on THAT!
Aside from the mad tinkerer. this scenario has a couple of interesting, very 1st edition-ey NPC's, including a friendly tavern owner Uwe, and Kugelschreiber's grumpy cook and personal assistant, halfling Fatboy (yes, REALLY). The thugs are your typical, standard Old World ruffians, but like I've said before - there's more to them than meets the eye. This scenario is not combat heavy, but the PC's will have to make a couple of important rolls, as well as think fast, if they'll want to finish this adventure in once piece. The finale is spectaculary awesome, and for me, it is the highlight of "Eureka!", well worth playing for this very part alone.

"Eureka!" has been first published in the issue 93 of the "White Dwarf" magazine, back in the day. Later it was reprinted in the "Restless Dead", and finally Andy Law revised it for the 2nd edition of WFRP. This is the version that I've played, and I had a lot of fun running it for my players. Check it out, it's perfect as a one-shot, or a quick scenario to run between chapters of a campaign.

I also have to mention yesterday's news about Warhammer: The Old World. It seems that the classic Warhammer Fantasy Battle will be back! I am very optimistic about this fact, but the 2-3 years before this happens do make me wonder, if Games Workshop didn't revealed this info too soon. We shall see, and meanwhile stay tuned for more Grimvember!

Not gonna lie, the hype is real!
Until next time!

  1. Kugelschreiber look just like an Old World version of professor Calculus.

For the announcement, either GW was afraid of leaks and wanted to control the reveal, or they want to gauge the interest, before deciding on how much work they'll do on it.

    1. Yeah, I do wonder if this project will go the way of the Horus Heresy (minimal support for a dedicated fanbase), or if they'll actually re-route a considerable ammount of working power from the Age of Sigmar team.
